This rhapsody is my first work for a soloist with orchestra. Though the work has no narrative, it is largely inspired by narrative-driven scores, such as those for movies and video games, as well as some of my favorite concerti.
Much of the musical material, primarily in the cadenzas of the piece, was composed collaboratively with the solo flutist (and my good friend and roommate), Claire Gunsbury. Because we had many opportunities to share our ideas with each other, the process of composing this rhapsody was easily one of the most collaborative compositional processes I have been through. There were a couple of afternoons during which we would noodle around on our instruments to come up with ideas for the cadenzas, she would share various extended techniques on the flute with me, and I would think about how the piece reminded me of ants on a field.
