This score uses an earlier engraving. It’s clear and usable, but I’m in the process of creating a cleaner, updated version. If you purchase now, you’ll get the new edition automatically once it’s ready.
String Quartet No. 1 “Reflections” (2017)
Premiered by the Yellowtail Quartet in Boulder, Colorado on June 28th, 2021.
Duration: c. 15:00
This quartet is a musical scrapbook of four significant memories from my life between 2013 and 2017, spanning the years from the beginning of high school through my transition into college. Each movement is titled with a time and place, reflecting moments that left a lasting impression on me. They are not connected by narrative, but by personal meaning.
The opening movement, “Chesapeake Bay,” was inspired by and composed during a foggy morning in a hotel overlooking the harbor in Baltimore. “University” is meant to depict the restless energy and emotional turbulence of starting college and transitioning into adulthood. “Midnight Snow; Grief” reflects on a much older memory—a difficult night during my freshman year of high school, marked by loss and confusion, set against the stillness of snowfall. The final movement, “Trapkus,” is named after my high school orchestra director, who was immensely influential on my musical development and one of my biggest advocates and inspirations as a composer and violist. The music of this movement attempts to reflect his more minimalist style.
